“Is there a difference?” I hear you ask.
“Absolutely” I reply.
Fashion is a fad. It does not last forever. Style is unique and personal. Above all, it stands the test of time.
Let’s get into the details ………………………..
Fashion.
Fashion is difficult to define in the sense that it means something different to everyone.
Fashion is trend-led.
If you follow fashion and wear ‘fashionable’ outfits, you are ‘in fashion’.
Basically it is about following trends. Making purchases for your wardrobe to recreate the latest trend.
Fashion is beautiful and vibrant and so glamorous.
In addition, it is popular, fun and fresh. Representing how I want to feel.
However, and this is a big, however. Fashion can be exhausting. Constantly striving to own all the latest trends. Keeping up to date with what is new. What everyone will be wearing.
In addition, it is expensive. Owning a fashionable wardrobe is somewhat draining on your finances and requires purchasing new trends on a regular basis.
Above all, fashion is to follow. This is where I seriously start to question where my loyalties lie.
Style.
Style has nothing to do with Fashion.
It is personal. Your own choice. You are in control.
You are not following anyone else. You are not wearing things because someone tells you too.
Your own personal style is what you feel comfortable in. Clothing that makes you feel confident. Really feel good about yourself. It is a way of expressing yourself through the clothing you wear.
However, style is not just about the clothes you wear. It includes the way in which you wear them. The way you ‘style’ different outfits.
I recently created a list of tips on how you can look more stylish here.
In Conclusion.
Fashions fade, Style is eternal – Yves Saint Laurent.
I will continue to find fashion and trends interesting, however, my focus is and always will be on my own personal style.
I would much prefer to be an individual than follow the crowd. In other words, I appreciate looking stylish over, looking fashionable.
More importantly, Style is sustainable, fashion is not. The pieces in my wardrobe can last a lifetime which is so much healthier for the environment and my bank balance!
Above all, I want my own wardrobe to make me feel good. To suit me. My own personal edit. For example, crop tops and massive White trainers may be in fashion but that does not mean they will look good on me.
What do you think? Which do you prefer, fashion or style? I would love to hear your thoughts in the comments below.
