What is your skin type?

What is your skin type? This can often be a tricky question to answer. Before we can embark on creating your own skincare routine, it is imperative we understand what your own personal skin type is. This will help us to understand what particular ingredients are needed in your routine and what ingredients we should avoid. Below I explain the different skin types and how you can discover which skin type catergory you belong to.

What is a skin type?

Everyone’s skin is different. We are all unique and individual and there is never a one size fits all when it comes to looking after your skin.

In addition, over the years our skin types often change for a variety of reasons making it even more difficult to understand.

The four main skin types are as follows:

Normal Skin.

Normal skin is just that. Normal. You will not suffer with any dryness or oiliness. Your skin will be smooth and relatively problem- free.

Dry Skin.

With dry skin, your skin feels tight. Like it is desperate for a drink of water. You may also have some dry patches that makeup often clings too.

Oily Skin.

If you are more of an oily skin type your skin feels greasy and looks shiny. You will often suffer from breakouts and/or acne.

Combination Skin.

Combination skin is a combination of the above skin types (hence the name!) You are usually oily in the centre of your face and either dry or normal on the outer points of your face.

In addition to the above four skin types, there is one more that can often cause a lot of confusion:

Dehydrated Skin.

Not to be confused with Dry skin. Dehydrated skin often affects people with an oily skin type and can cause redness, congestion and potentially some inflammation.

The skin type test.

The most effective way of distinguishing your own skin type is as follows:

  • Wash your face: remove all traces of makeup and give your face a good clean.
  • Once washed do not apply any skincare products: wait for around 15 minutes to let your skin settle.
  • After the 15 minutes have passed: look through the above skin type characteristics and assess your own face. How does it feel and look without any skincare products applied?

I hope this method has helped you to discover your own personal skin type. If you are still unsure, please contact me via the big green button below or through my contact page here. and I will be happy to help further.
